If you went raving in Belgium in the late noughties early eurm tenies you’ve probably once heard Cthulhu play on a party!
I was pleasantly surprised when he invited me to partake in his 26 Mixes for No Cash series. And here is my contribution to the series, can’t say it was easy, crafting a set with such strict boundaries but I’m happy with the endresult! Expect #electro and #techno with a pinch of #acid.
Here’s what Cthulhu has to say about the mix series:
“For the 26 Mixes For No Cash concept, I was talking to Boston-based Frequency.M about something else and thought we should do something together. If you listen to his mixes and mine, you will hear that we play similar styles and have tons of records in common. The ideal would have been to tag-team at a live party, but with geography and COVID-19 restrictions, it was not going to happen. Instead, I thought it would be interesting to hear what we would both make of a same selection of records. He was up for it. We picked 26 records from our collections, with which we made a mix each. The number reminded me of Aphex Twin’s compilation 26 Mixes For Cash, so I shamelessly corrupted that title (and the artwork).
Next thing you know, I decided to challenge 25 other DJs to make it 26 mixes of 26 records. In today’s reality, many of us record-pushers are stranded, playing records at home, not in front of an audience. I thought many would welcome the opportunity to, at least, play them with an aim. And indeed, the reactions have been very enthusiastic. The timeline, of course, is dictated by the individuals’ circumstances, but we will end up with 26 pairs of mixes in due course. I am very excited. :-)”

Cthulhu, Belgian DJ based in London. I play darker shades of techno and electro, often Acid-tainted. That said, I rarely stick to one style when I play.
I started buying records in 1996, playing out in 1997, and have been doing both ever since. It is ruinous, but oh! so addictive. I also have a weekly residence on Belgian radio warm.fm, which I have been trying to keep interesting for close to five years, now.
